In the evolution of the botanical sciences university of Pisa has played an important role: Pisa on campus was founded in the sixteenth century, the work of Luca Ghini (1490-1556) founder of the Botanical Garden, the custom of drying and preserving plants for educational and scientific purposes, partially replacing the older tradition of humanistic design.

 

The Museum preserves materials and collections of plant-related research carried out by scholars over the centuries. Among the collections it is particularly important that the herbarium has about 300,000 samples. It is a collection of plants that were dried, stops on sheets of paper and accompanied by various news regarding places, dates and finds gatherers. The sheets ordered in accordance with appropriate criteria represent the testimony of travel, erborizzazioni, researches and explorations that have allowed us to know the flora of the various territories of the Earth and to discover new entities vegetables.
